Tech Sovereignty – Illusive or tangible?

On 3 June, EU Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen announced the Tech Sovereignty package in which, among other tech items, the Cloud and AI Development Act is presented.

The act describes how EU should triple its own Cloud and AI capabilities and capacity over the next five to seven years.

In early June I attended the Nextcloud Summit 2026 on Tech Sovereignty in lovely Munich to get a better understanding of where Europe really stands.

It was incredibly interesting to experience how the digital independency discussion has reached a state where governmental institutions, NGOs and enterprises who are building their digital capabilities on Open Source technology, were ready to present experiences and results.

The Nextcloud Enterprise Day kicks off on 20 October in Copenhagen, Denmark.
