A field trip to …

This week Ulrik Haumann, Jens Sorensen and I had a unique opportunity to visit viñedo BOSQUE DE MATASNOS (BMA) in the highlands of Ribera de Duero.

CEO Jaime Postigo took us through the history of BMA with deep insight and enthusiasm, while traversing the entire wine making process through to a very hands-on review of the operation in the newly built facilities.

I would like to think that I am used to operating in rather dynamic business environments, but the wine making business seems to come across with just a few more variables going into the equation …

Obviously, the key element of winemaking is to optimize every step of the process to extract the very best of the terroir to match the characteristics of the grape varieties – and BMA surely does that! But Jaime’s uncompromisingly stern focus on producing #organic grapes while driving a self-sufficient and #sustainable operation is admirably paving the path for what future winemaking looks like.

Lessons learned? Well, over and above the hardcore operational insights into the winemaking industry, it was refreshing to witness how Jaime and BMA had tenaciously executed a long term strategy stretching nearly two decades – and still ongoing – to release the full potential of the land, the grapes, and the winery in a world that often favors short term results. Kudos!

A very warm thanks to Jaime Postigo for graciously sharing his experience and knowledge, and an equally warm thanks to Ulrik Haumann for organising the visit.
